CHAPTER 1

Don’t lay me off. Don’t lay me off. Don’t lay me off. Don’t lay me off. Don’t lay me off. Don’t lay me off.
Berenice was so worry about hearing the decisive words ‘You’re laid off’ that she couldn’t even listen to the long monologue of her boss. He was talking about his company’s state of business and the internal issues that had forced the board of directors to take drastic measures such as the playoff of twenty employees. Four per division.
And now, after praying for a long time in the last few days in the hope of being never called to the director’s office, she was just there.
She was terrified at the idea of being laid off. What terrorized her was not so much the thought of leaving a job in which she had prepared pay envelopes and filed invoices for four years like a robot, as all consequences deriving from that. Above all her mother advising her to come back home, under her oppressive and protective wing.
She was so overcome by despair that she could only catch some fragments of his boss’s long speech.
“The economic crisis leaves us no way out… the financial plan… there were some discrepancies… a wave of change is needed… new liquidity… unfortunately… too many employees… great expense… without a new policy there will be some unavoidable downsizing… Miss Collins, do you agree?”
Berenice went on nodding, frightened, while thinking of something else.
“Miss Collins, did you get it?” asked the man with a little more determination in his voice, making the young woman jump from her seat.
“Of course I did. I totally agree with you”, answered Berenice, collecting herself at once, hoping that she hadn’t just said to agree on her layoff. When she got nervous, why couldn’t she ever follow a speech without losing the thread of it after two seconds?
“Fine! So do you already have a good plan for, I guess, the next three… five years?”
“Of course!” Just don’t lay me off.
“I didn’t think that you were so well-versed in this field. I even had your name in the list of people to dismiss! Now there’s nothing left for me but to wait before reading your ideas. For next Monday I expect to have an innovative financial plan for our company on my desk.”
“Financial plan?”
“Yes. Nothing special. Just two ideas about how to make the company get back on top within three years. These documents can be helpful to you. Take them and… please don’t disappoint me.” Then the boss sent her away, handing a six-inch-thick packet of papers to her.
Once Berenice got out of Mr. Footer’s office, she found herself walking to her desk with her head that was still dazed. She didn’t know whether to jump with joy for saving her own job o to run away, far from there, throwing up all those files: she didn’t even know where to start to organize a financial plan that could improve the fortunes of the publishing house for which she worked.
For four years she had been preparing pay envelopes for all the company’s employees by using a very easy computer program or she had been recording the internal communications and filing the invoices at the most, after handing them to her colleague Sandy.
Those tasks were the only ones she was able to do. The only ones she had learned, apart from spending her spare time on Facebook and Twitter or doing shopping on Amazon and eBay.
If in the computer field she was a mere dilettante, in the financial one she was totally ignorant.
As she got to her desk, next to Sandy’s, she awkwardly dropped into the chair with a faraway look.
“Nice, well? Did he lay you off?” began to get worried her colleague.
“Not yet,” answered Berenice downhearted.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that I’ve escaped the layoff just for now, till Monday,” she informed her while taking a chocolate-covered plain biscuit from the drawer. Stress always made her hungry.
“I told you to buy the lucky charm on eBay! With that one you wouldn’t be in this mess now,” blamed Sandy, waving a red bookmark with some Chinese golden writing and a red ribbon, bringer of luck and success, just in front of her face.
“I don’t believe in such things.”
“That’s bad! Above all with the Saturn and Venus’s quadrature that will make this June become a living hell for all Sagittarians. Two weeks ago I warned you that this month you’d have one nasty surprise after the other. My cousin Dorine is a Sagittarius too and you can’t even imagine what she’s going through.”
“Sandy, please… I was born under an unlucky star and the choice of my name is a confirmation of that,” grumbled Berenice, exasperated by her friend’s excessively superstitious nature. And besides she hated her name. It reminded Berenice, a tragedy by Racine in which her namesake renounced her love forever thus choosing the loneliness. The same loneliness Berenice had felt for a long time now.
“Well, what now? Is our Berenice the fourth employee who has to leave the company?” said the velvety voice of Karen Jordan, the newcomer who seemed to be too smart to risk losing her job.
Too smart in getting Mr. Footer into bed!
“Not yet” was Berenice’s tart reply. She gave Karen a withering glance, but Karen had already turned away, laughing, and went towards some other helpless victim to bother.
“I wish I could dress like her,” sighed out Sandy, trying to suck in her stomach without taking her eyes off Karen’s athletic and sinuous build. Karen wore a close-fitting black leather suit that made her look like an intriguing and sexy panther.
“And be like her? No, thanks. I hate people who exploit their beauty to get whatever they want.”
“I agree with you, but people see us just as two large-sized girls who are envious of an extra-small one. What a terrible world!”
Unluckily Sandy was right and finally there was nothing left for Berenice to do but put her chocolate plain biscuit back in the drawer and go back to work.
When the two colleagues knocked off, unlike the others, they made for the coffee bar next to the office where Sandy’s cousin worked.
“Why should we rush into the parking lot at once and squabble with the others, when we only have to wait for a half an hour to find a half-empty space where we can maneuver without fear of hitting other cars?” said Sandy again and again to justify the big cup of ice cream that she always ate before going back home. At home she would have found her mother waiting for her with the usual undressed salad that her daughter had to eat if she wanted to lose weight.
As usual, they opted for two cups of ice cream with whipped cream.
Harry, Sandy’s cousin, came to take their orders.
“Have you noticed how much excitement there is after the crew for the movie The Supremacy came to town?” exclaimed the exuberant Harry.
“I’m wondering how a famous movie director like Rob Sorenson could shoot some scenes of one of his movies in a so anonymous and colorless town like Brocketville,” commented Sandy after casting a cursory glance at the ice cream list, that she actually knew perfectly.
“Or how he found out about this God-forsaken small town! In short, Brocketville hasn’t any significant artistic and cultural heritage, there are no offices of a famous company or some supernatural phenomena have never occurred here. How can one choose a place like this for a movie?” echoed Berenice.
“I don’t know, but yesterday they said on TV that today would have been the last day for shooting and the street out front would have been finally reopened to traffic. Too bad! Lots of people came here to drink something, hoping to catch a glimpse of some actors. In these three days we’ve done a roaring trade.”
“I don’t really understand what’s so special about these celebrities,” admitted Berenice annoyed. Although she had always parked her car next to the barriers delimiting the area in which the movie scenes were being shot, she never stopped for a moment to have a look with the intention of seeing an actor, especially David Donkey and Marc Hailen, and the town was plastered over with their photos and inscriptions by their fans.
“Are you out of your mind? I’d go to any lengths to have David Donkey’s autograph. I’d also asked Mr. Footer a day off, but that bastard didn’t concede it to me,” burst out Sandy, still furious for the shooting with her favorite actor was just a few steps from her workplace, and yet she couldn’t stay to see him.
“I wouldn’t know what to do with an autograph,” burst out Berenice.
“Not even if it was Marc Hailen’s?” teased Harry who knew his old schoolfellow’s tastes.
“That’s right. I liked how he played the violin, not his handwriting,” she hastened to clarify. Marc Hailen was the violinist of a pop group who caused a sensation. Combining the sweet melody of the violin and the most urban notes of The Dark Angels made the famous band move up the charts, above all if the young violinist in question played on the stage with just a pair of torn and threadbare jeans on, leaving the rest of his perfect body on display. However, in the recent years this musician had given up playing and had been interested in cinema.
After two movies directed by the famous couple Emily Keys and Steven Maddle, the boy’s aunt and uncle, Marc had launched out totally into the cinema and after only three years he had acted in four successful movies.
“Well, I hate him. How could he leave The Dark Angels? He betrayed his own friends and all his fans!” intervened Sandy.
“He probably wasn’t paid enough. Some people can’t be contented,” supposed Harry.
“You may be right. I’ve heard that Marc Hailen has just insured his body for ten million dollars,” whispered Sandy scandalized.
“It’s true. I read it in the magazine Tabloid. It seems that if only you punch him in the face and he bruises just a little bit, you have to work for ten lives to make up for damage done.”
“What a narcissist!” objected Berenice, remembering that she had read that piece of news on the internet just that morning.
Luckily the two ice creams arrived straightaway and all the subjects and the dark thoughts about their job insecurity were at once forgotten in order to give way to the taste of creams mixing in the cup.
When they came out the coffee bar the sun was replaced by a downpour that had cooled the air and soaked any unfortunate person without an umbrella in a few seconds.
“Oh no! I’ll get soaked and soil my new shoes,” complained Berenice immediately, in an attempt to shelter her red suede flat pumps from the pelting rain.
“I told you so! The horoscope never lies! See you tomorrow,” said Sandy while laughing and running towards her own car.
Surrendered to the idea of being the victim of celestial bodies, quadrature and unlucky stars, Berenice started running to the opposite direction, towards the oldest and shabbiest car of the parking lot that was empty by then.
Once she got to the car, she was wet to the skin, with her hair being stuck to the face, thus blocking her view.
Luckily she did not have to waste time trying to find the keys to open the car, since the last time she had her car serviced the lock broke down and now the car could be locked only from the inside.
She finally decided to stop spending money for that wreck and she became convinced that she could use it even if she could not lock it from the outside.
Besides… Who on earth would steal a car like that?
It was not even as worth as the gasoline in its tank.
But at least she could go to work with a car and in less than four years she could even have boasted to possess a vintage car.
If it had lasted for another four years!
Short of breath for running in the rain, Berenice closed the door and started getting her breath back while drying herself.
When she started up the engine the rain had already stopped.
All she had to do was wait at the coffee bar for another ten minutes and she would not have been wet through and soiled her new shoes.
She cursed the misfortune and engaged first gear, then she left the parking lot setting off for home.
She took the last bend feeling better at the thought that she would have taken off her soaked and sticky clothes shortly after, but just when she was driving in the courtyard of her condominium a car shot out from her left side, cutting in before her.
“You moron! You can’t see the stop sign!” shouted the girl, swerving suddenly to not conclude that day with a street accident.
She was about to regain control over her vehicle, when she saw the wall running along her condominium in front of her.
With her heart still in her mouth for the lucky escape a few seconds earlier, she was able to have enough quick reflexes to brake with all her strength.
The car bumped loudly, making Berenice’s body leap forward so much so that it hit the steering-wheel, although it was fastened by the seat belt. The ‘huge object’ occupying the back seat leaped forward too and then it fell headlong onto the floor behind the front seats.
Dazed and trembling for that succession of disasters, Berenice started the engine again that had stalled because of the sudden braking.
Cursing the horoscope, Sandy and the lucky charms that her colleague always invited her to buy in order to avoid any kind of tragedy, she engaged the reverse and set off for home a few feet away from there.
Another few meters, then I’ll be saved!
She was about to pass the gate, when she heard some noise come from the back seat.
She was too focused on driving after all that she had just went through that took only a quick glance from the rear-view mirror.
From the reflection she caught a glimpse of two menacing eyes looking at her from the inside of her car, but this was enough for her to scream with fright and lose control of the vehicle again, so it crashed into the partition wall of the numbered lots in the residents’ car parking.
No airbag popped out and Berenice found herself with her breasts pressed against the wheel and her right knee hit the dashboard, while the presence behind her hit her seat.
Her moaning with the other’s one became confused.
When Berenice opened her eyes again and saw that the front part of her car was a total wreck, she had to keep from bursting into tears.
Now she did not have even a car!
“Where did you learn to drive?” shouted a furious male voice, making her start in fear.
She tried to turn, but the seat belt was stuck blocking her, so she had to take off.
While she was fiddling with that trap that held her captive, the stranger had already got off the vehicle.
Enraged and frightened, she jumped out of the car, careless about her aching knee.
In front of her she found a boy of about twenty-five trying to stop his nose hemorrhage with the sleeve of his pullover.
“Who are you?” shouted Berenice in return. She did not know whether to kick him for giving her a fright to such an extent that she had wrecked the car, or to help him since his nose had began to puff up and was bleeding freely.
“Look at what you did to me, idiot!” he attacked her furiously, pointing at the swollen bruise on his nose.
“I’m sorry, but maybe you should have thought about it before getting on my car secretly! Look at my car! What a disaster! And now who’ll pay damages?”
“Should I pay for that clunker? Are you out of your mind?! It’s nobody’s fault if you don’t know how to drive!”
“I know how to drive! Excuse me if I was almost struck down by a heart attack when I found a potential homicidal maniac behind me while I was maneuvering!”
“Do I look like a homicidal maniac to you?” said the boy irritated, getting near her.
Although Berenice was still upset, she could not help having a closer look at that face before answering.
She studied him just a moment. She was about to answer rudely, when she was attracted by something behind him.
Just behind him there was one of the posters stuck up by fans of the actors starring in The Supremacy, the movie that was being shot in those days.
It just took a few seconds for her to match perfectly the image of the actor Marc Hailen with that one of the man being in front of her.
She opened her mouth to speak, but she was barely able to make sounds.
“Well, what now?” he went on, more and more irritated, making Berenice’s brain go haywire. This last one was reviewing all the articles and videos that she had seen about him.
“You insured your body for ten million dollars,” was the one thing she could say with a feeble voice, being just about to faint.
“That’s right. And now, unless you want to spend the rest of your life paying for your mistakes, I would advise you to give me some ice and a coffee. At once.”

PROLOGUE

October 2011

The drivers had just finished charging the luggage on the two black cars, too luxurious to avoid catching the curious glances of the whole village.
“This is the moment to say goodbye”, Emily’s mother claimed, her eyes still swollen with tears after those last days spent quarreling and then giving up sadly to the decision of letting her daughter leave to go towards her destiny and make her dream come true.
Emily run up to her with tears flowing like rivers of happiness and suffering for that imminent and quite unexpected departure.
“I really wish you could come with me”, she whispered in her ear holding her tight.
“So do I, darling”, her mother sighed painfully, thinking about her duties which forced her to stay anchored to that little village and to its inhabitants. She had a job and her employer had refused to grant her a three months’ leave, menacing to sack her. She couldn’t leave her job, be left without money. She was alone now and she had responsibilities. Besides, if things didn’t turn right for her daughter, she would have to take care economically of both of them. Finally she couldn’t leave her sister alone, since her husband had vanished into thin air and stopped contributing to the family’s maintenance.
“You’ll see, Christmas will soon arrive. You won’t have time to notice you miss me and I’ll be back”, Emily reassured her, parting from her mother with one of her usual gorgeous smiles which could infect with happiness even the sulkiest and saddest person in the world.
“Please, be careful”.
“I’m sixteen now. I have grown up and Mrs. Martens is going to take care of me all the time”.
After she was able to part from her mother, who looked unable to let her go, she run to hug her cousin who stood stiff and trembling on the edge of the street.
“Oh, Leny! I will miss you a lot!”
“So will I”, her cousin could just whisper trying to control her tears with an almost superhuman effort. Plunging her face into Emily’s silky and blonde hair, she tried to smell her perfume for the last time, knowing she would never forget it.
Emily had been like a sister to her during all those years spent in the two families’ house they had shared since Emily’s father had died, when she was just two years old.
Unluckily loneliness had concerned her aunt too, when she was abandoned by her treacherous and false husband, who left her alone with a little daughter and a sea of debts.
However, the two sisters had plucked up courage together and had gone to live in the country in a little detached house they had divided into two flats.
Emily lived with her mother on the upper floor, her aunt and Leny lived downstairs.
The two girls were born in the same year and had had to share everything because of their mothers’ financial straits, so they had become very close and loved each other a lot.
But now fate had wanted to part them and, even if Leny would have liked to shout to her cousin not to leave, she couldn’t. She knew how much that opportunity meant for her cousin’s future and she realized in the bottom of her heart that decision would take Emily high, just as she wished: she wanted to became a movie star!
Even if that imminent separation would make her suffer, she would never play the card of emotional blackmail. She knew she had to let her go. For her sake.
Just with that understanding, Leny kept her tears back and showed one of her typical shy smiles.
“Promise me you won’t forget me”, Emily said opening her blue eyes wide with that sulky and lovely look which one day would make her gain the approval of the public.
“That’s impossible! You will always be with me. In my heart”, Leny answered in her shy and sweet voice.
“You know it will be difficult to communicate with you, but I swear you that every evening, before going to bed, I will look at the sky and wish you good night”.
“Oh, Emily!”, her cousin whispered moved, coming back to hug her for the last time before the arrival of Mrs. Martens, worried about missing the flight.
“Emily, we must go. It’s late”, she claimed in her usual brisk tone.
The two cousins looked at each other for the last time promising silently never to forget each other.
Leny would have wished to follow Emily to the car, but the pain for her departure didn’t let her move a muscle and the girl was soon joined by her mother and her aunt for the last advice.
After a long time, Leny could move and approach the other car that was waiting still parked along the narrow and dirt road just a bit behind the other.
Suddenly the pain for what would happen in a short time became so sharp as to leave her breathless.
That day not only the one who was more than a sister to her was going out of her life for the next months or years, but also her best friend.
She couldn’t even imagine how going to school would be without Emily and her aura of beauty which she often used to catch the attention of all the nicest boys in the school and which sometimes protected her from bad mates who made fun of her because she had slightly sticking-out ears.
As if that wasn’t enough, she would find herself without him.
Chris.
Her best friend, the one she and her cousin spent all the afternoons with, the one she often peeped at from her bedroom’s window, which opened directly in front of his.
She had spent all her childhood with her group of friends, but because of her exaggerated shyness only her cousin and Chris had been able to gain her trust.
He was the only one who made her laugh and let free the talkativeness she hid from all the others.
Maybe it was because he was two years older than the others or perhaps because he had been put into his grandfather’s care after he had lost his parents.
Nevertheless Chris was the only one who could overcome her fear for the external world and…who could make her heart beat fast.
When she heard the metallic and crackling noise of the old door of Chris’s grandfather’s house, Leny felt a jump in her heart.
She turned and saw the boy approach striding with his only surviving relative, who was giving him the last advice.
“…it’s important. That world is unsafe”.
“You’ve already told me, grandpa”.
“Always remember what is the real compass of life”.
“I will, grandpa”.
“Your heart, boy. Your heart. Neither money nor fame, as they will try to make you believe”, the old man moralized coming near Mrs. Martens to get the last explanations about the journey.
Chris stopped.
He was nervous and his face was tired and marked. He had spent the last days sleepless trying to understand whether what he was doing was the right choice: leaving his grandfather, his friends, his home to go overseas and became an actor.
He had finally taken a decision, but now, in front of Leny’s frightened and puzzled look caused by the mess and the change, he felt a thrill of indecision in his heart.
He saw her come near him scared and trembling, tight in her jeans jacket.
“Emily is already in the car”, she advised him in a low voice, trying not to look into his eyes because she feared she couldn’t hold back her tears. That was the last time she could talk with him for a long time.
How could she sleep without being lulled by the lamp lighted till late at night in his room or go out with the rest of the company without his presence to protect and reassure her?
But above all, how could she live without having him close to her every day of her life?
Suddenly overwhelmed with thrills, she closes herself still more tight in her jacket.
“You are trembling! You should go and put something warmer on, if you don’t want to catch a cold”, he immediately worried, massaging vigorously her arms and then her back to warm her.
In a few seconds she was overwhelmed in one of Chris’s warmest and sweetest hugs.
How could she let him go?
She couldn’t.
Shaken by her own emotions, she found herself crying silently against the boy’s chest.
She instinctively hugged him with all the force she had.
“I will miss you, Leny”, he confessed kissing her light brown hair.
She wished she could tell him she would miss him a lot too, but she remained silent fearing she couldn’t control herself and she would pray him not to leave.
“But I have to do it. Do you understand?”, he went on in a decided and serious voice. “I promise I will become a very famous and rich actor, so I will buy a house for you and your mother. I will make you happy”.
But what could happiness mean to her if he wasn’t close to her?
She slowly parted from him and looked into his eyes, in spite of the blurring coming from tears.
She got lost into those fantastic green eyes which always looked at her with fondness and sweetness.
She knew how many difficulties he had had to face in his young life and now fate was giving him the opportunity of changing his future as he had often wished.
“I don’t care whether you become a rich and famous actor. I only wish you to be happy”. Even if that will be without me.
She saw him hesitate and hold his jaw tight nervously, while his eyes were blurred with sadness.
In spite of the tears streaking her heart-shaped face again, she smiled shy and she just skimmed his shaved face with her fingertips.
Surprised by that unexpected touch, he caught her hand into his and brought it to his heart.
They went on staring at each other till the weight of the moment became unbearable.
“Will you miss me, Leny?”, he asked in a hoarse voice, taking her face in his hands.
That question had the overwhelming power of a tsunami on Leny’s already weak psyche and she burst in an uncontrolled cry which made her almost fall down.
Luckily Chris was still holding her tight and that prevented her from falling to the ground.
As soon as Leny recovered a bit of self-control, Chris relaxed his hold and the two of them found themselves lost in each other’s eyes.
Even if they had known each other since she was only three years old, in the last two years things had changed. Leny had started looking at him in a different way and wishing a closer physical contact from him.
Like all girls, she too had started looking at boys under a different light from a short time and she had peeped at Chris from the window when he undressed, leaving her always confused and troubled, but she had never wanted to investigate deeply into the reason of her curiosity, since she cared too much about their friendship and the balance existing between Chris, Emily and herself.
What’s more, she had been seldom alone with him, without Emily’s overwhelming and enthralling presence, with whom Chris shared a lot of passions, like the one for acting. Or without the crowd of girls who often followed Chris to catch his attention, taking a fancy to hid good looks.
But now they were alone.
Nobody was looking at them.
Suddenly Chris’s eyes were lighted by a strange glare unknown to Leny.
“Chris…”, she sighed troubled.
She saw him move his glance from her eyes to her mouth and before she could realize what was happening, Chris’s warm and soft lips were on hers trembling.
A kiss. That kiss was enough and finally the lock in Leny’s heart opened and she discovered love for the first time. Real love. The one with a capital A.
She felt his mouth moving on hers, while that new feeling flooded her heart till she was left breathless.
When Chris parted from her, she found herself panting.
She passed her tongue on her burning lips. They tasted of tears and of him.
She would never forget such a sweet and at the same time masculine taste.
Her heart was still hammering furiously in her bosom, when they heard Mrs. Marten’s voice calling him to get into the car.
That magic moment of tenderness vanished in a moment making room for the darkest despair.
Leny wished to shout to him not to leave at the top of her voice because she loved him. Now she knew it. She was really sure about that, but her mind prevented her from putting an end to Chris’s dreams just for sheer selfishness.
“Leny, will you miss me?”, he asked her in a broken voice.
“I…”, I don’t know how I will be able to go on without you, especially since I have understood I love you”.
“Leny, one word from you will be enough…Just one and I will stay here. With you”.
How could he give her such a responsibility?
How could she be the one to choose between making her love dream or his dream of getting success in the show business come true?
Even if she really wished to declare her feelings for him and to stay in his arms forever, she realized how it would be unfair to clip his wings.
A promising film director had seen some natural talent in him and a future career as an actor. How could she forbid all that to him?
She unwillingly parted from him, but with the certainty of doing so just for the infinite love she felt for him, and left him dismayed.
“You must go or you’ll miss the flight”, she could just say trying to keep her voice firm.
“Leny, I…you…”.
“I’ll get off very well. Don’t worry”.
“Really?”.
Lenny nodded vigorously, since she felt she had lost control of her pain.
“I’ll be back soon”, he whispered almost as shocked as she was.
She managed to smile a last time before she turned and ran home, while her heart was breaking in her bosom.
“Take care of my grandpa”, those were Chris’s last words she heard before getting to her house door and closing herself inside.
She didn’t even hear the cars leaving and the last goodbyes shouted from her mother and aunt, because as soon as the door closed behind her, she fell to the ground struck with pain.
A dull and deep pain which broke her soul till it bled.
And this time there was nobody to comfort her. Not even Emily.

CHAPTER 1

“I can’t do it” I whispered lifelessly, looking at my gaunt reflection in the mirror.
Meanwhile Odette was trying to fix my hair into a perfect chignon and Margot
was getting busy hiding those deep dark circles that didn’t seem willing to ever abandon me.
“Nonsense! You'll do great, Lucy! It's just a dinner!” Margot tried to reassure me while putting the third layer of concealer under my eyes.
“A dinner with my mother and her new family that I haven’t seen for six years” I reminded her trying to curb the anxiety that was gripping my stomach.
“That’s why you have to go! Show them what they missed in all this time! You need to prove them that their abandonment did nothing to you and that you came out victorious… Even better, you are stronger now” Odette tried to convince me.
“Victorious, me? Have you looked at me?”
“Yes, you are beautiful, Lucy!” Odette immediately replied with a wide smile on her face.
“I’m not beautiful! I’m tired, sleep deprived, penny less, constantly unemployed, God knows how much in debt I am and I have countless worries about Chucky’s health”
“Don’t say that! You need to look at things from a different perspective!”
“Which one?” I asked bitterly.
“For starters you look great. You even lost a few pounds”
“Thanks to a colic that kept me from eating for almost a week. Even now I haven’t fully recovered” I reminded her, thinking back to how I had been ill until five days prior.
“A colic that has made you lose enough weight to put on this wonderful body con dress by Chanel” Margot added.
“A dress I can’t even afford given I am broke” I countered depressed, sliding my trembling fingers over that wonderful emerald dress that belonged to Odette.
“It doesn’t matter. The only important thing right now is that this dress makes you look incredibly chic and shows off your eyes and your clear skin. Besides, you always said it yourself that you would never want your mother, or even worse your stepsister, to know how much you struggle economically and surely with this dress and Margot’s Louboutin, nobody will take you for a poor unlucky girl. Not counting the fact that you live in an actual mansion surrounded by hectares of garden”
Too bad reality is very different, I wanted to answer. I had ran out some grandma’s patrimony last year because of the continuous restoration works that needed to be done on that endless mansion. I had gotten some sale propositions but the idea of separating from the only thing that kept me linked to the one person that ever loved me, seemed too painful and unthinkable.
Before dying grandma, she wanted to leave me her countryside mansion, inherited from a royal blood relative. She loved that properly and for years that she did everything she could to bring it back to its old splendour, but the task was endless and every year a new issue needed solving.
Money was long gone and finding a job kept getting harder, as I struggled to keep an employment for longer than a few months.
“Besides, now you are a dentist’s secretary!” continued Odette, trying to show off my latest job I had found and started just two days prior.
“Fine, you’re right! I must not get myself down. I’m twenty-seven years old, independent woman, with a great employment, a house everyone would envy and, most importantly, two wonderful friends that I love ant who love me back”
“We will always be here for you, Lucy!” Odette encouraged me hugging me, followed immediately by Margot.
“And you also have a bunch of alpha males ready to protect you waiting in line behind that door, waiting to jump you” joked Margot giggling.
As a matter of fact, muffled whining noises came from behind the door.
In a moment I opened it and let my little furry tribe come in, that filled my life with happiness every day.
“Aramis! Byron! Lupin! Chucky!” I called joyfully as my friends stepped in front of me to stop the dogs from assaulting me and ruining the dress.
“Aramis, that dress cost me a fortune! Don’t you dare get close!” Odette warned him, trying to keep away the old Maremma shepherd that was so deaf he couldn’t hear a thing.
“You too, Byron. No point in trying to impress me” Margot followed, kneeling to pet the old dog that was dragging his hind legs with the help of a tiny kart that didn’t allow him much movement.
Only Lupin managed to squeeze through despite his wobbly stance due to a missing front leg.
“Margot, Lupin seems to like foundation” I giggled pointing how Lupin was focused on licking my entire face.
“No, Lupin! It took me an hour to put make up on her! Go away, you naughty boy!” Margot reproached him, as she had gotten herself distracted by Chucky, who was still weak because of a bronchitis he had gotten by spending days playing in the snow. He was now fourteen and he was getting sick even more often. Besides, since Cabaret, his playmate, had passed, he seemed to have let himself go to old age even more.
After Aaron’s death, having to deal with Cabaret’s as well just two months ago had been very difficult for me too. There wasn’t a day in which I didn’t look for those two big black and white dogs, always cuddly and hungry.
“You’ll keep grieving if you don’t start picking healthy and young dogs” Marie had tried telling me once, the manager of the shelter I used to spend every Christmas at picking a dog, since I was left alone. But unfortunately for me I always picked the oldest and most unfortunate dog in the shelter hoping to give them the best last days they could get.
Every time I asked her of “the dog nobody wanted”, the one that had been abandoned, thrown away like garbage because too old or sick to still get love from its own family.
The truth was I felt like them: kicked out of the house as I had no purpose anymore. I could never forget the day my mother put me at the door for not being able to get along with her new boyfriend and his daughter.
She didn't try even for a minute to understand my motives or my discomfort in suddenly finding myself put aside to make room for strangers that took away the love of the only parent I had in just a moment and that suddenly all of my things were to be shared with an intrusive and overwhelming stepsister.
But unfortunately it was always my fault in their eyes. I was the irritable one, the one pissed at everyone, the selfish one that wanted everything for herself…
Those thought hit me like a punch in my guts.
It had been eight years since then and after a first year of trying to make things up, I had understand that it was over. I could never get my family back.
It had been seven years since I had last seen or heard my mother, her husband Hubert or Nicole.
Seven years without a brief or casual encounter. That was proof of how big Paris is and of how far away I was from their reality.
Nevertheless, after all that time, now I was there, facing a mirror, getting ready to celebrate Christmas’ Eve with them, after the unexpected call from Nicole in which she let me know she wanted to start over and reunite the family.
Margot assured that it was because of that call that I had gotten ill, succumbing to an excruciating colic that lasted for days.
“Go get ‘em!” Margot and Odette encouraged me, walking with me through the driveway of the mansion I had previously cleared of snow in order to get to my small old Peugeot.

She surprisingly finds out of having met him five years before. That common past will immediately create a chemistry between the two, but Nicole has no intention of accepting the intrusion of Lucy in her life.
